Summary

Creative Practice is a 10 month long paid teen internship in art education and social justice. Through weekly professional development sessions and assisting in weekend art classes for ages 6 to adult, Creative Practice teens go behind the scenes at the museum to explore art careers, youth development and artmaking skills, and make connections between art, ourselves, and the world.

• Through the program, teens strengthen their collaboration, communication, organizational, and time management skills as they build community with like-minded peers in the Brooklyn Museum.
• Participants will assist in art classes for ages six to adult, each consisting of 15 students, taking place in the fall and spring. Participants will gain hands-on experience with youth, art materials, techniques, and classroom management. They will receive training on gender and family inclusive language, anti-racist pedagogy, multi-modal learning, popular education, and intersectionality.
• Participants will learn about socially engaged art and collaborate on their own art projects examining themes presented in Brooklyn Museum exhibitions which include climate change, feminism, Black history and culture, and LGBTQ issues.

Key Details

Compensation: $17/hour

Term: September 10, 2026–June 2027 (up to 120 hours)

Schedule:

• Thursdays: select weekly meetings, 4:30–6:30 pm
• Fridays: occasional teen staff events and field trips (TBD)
• Weekends: assisting in a weekly three-hour art class each semester (September 26–December 13, 2026, and early March to mid-May 2027)

Eligibility

• Must be enrolled in high school in NYC
• Must demonstrate an interest in art history, art-making, arts education, working with younger kids, wellness, and social justice.
• Must complete an online application, including 300 word essay, letter of recommendation, and group interview
