Summary

The Community Memory Fellowship (CMF) is Kinfolk Tech’s flagship cultural program, supporting Artist Fellow and a Researcher Fellow pairings to build augmented reality monuments and collect community stories rooted in local history and living memory.

The 2026–2027 cohort will be based in BROOKLYN, NY and is part of OURCHIVES, Kinfolk Tech’s campaign marking the nation’s 250th anniversary by centering the stories official commemorations leave out: displacement, people power, mutual aid, and collective imagination.

Each pair will develop a monument concept tied to one of the following themes:

• Making Home and Cultivating Belonging
• Building People Power
• Creative Culture for Survival
• Dreaming and Being Otherwise

Stipend: $6,000 per fellow

Duration: 6 months (October 2026–April 2027)

Time Commitment: 8–12 hours/week

Eligibility

The Community Memory Fellowship invites artists, storytellers, community archivists, and public historians from Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and Queer communities rooted in Brooklyn to document untold and under-represented histories — turning these public spaces into sites of living memory.

All applications must be submitted jointly by an applicant pair — one artist and one researcher. Individual applications are not accepted.

1. The Artist Fellow leads the creative and design direction of the AR monument — moodboarding, concept development, sound design, narration, art direction, and spatial and animation work.
2. The Researcher Fellow leads archival and community research, develops content cards that correlate with the monument, and supports curation of archival materials.
