The MFA’s European paintings collection is acknowledged as one of the strongest in North America, with especially deep holdings in Italian gold-ground works, seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, and nineteenth-century French pictures, including one of the largest collections of works by Claude Monet outside of France.

The Art of Europe department seeks a graduate intern who wishes a deeper familiarity with this important paintings collection and the research tasks of a curator. Working with the William and Ann Elfers Curator of Paintings, the graduate research intern will undertake specific research connected to major upcoming exhibitions focused on Renoir and Degas, as well as areas of the permanent collection. Interns will receive training and can expect to refine their research skills. Interns will be included in behind-the-scenes visits and learning opportunities. In addition to the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course (see below), interns will be included in behind-the-scenes visits and learning opportunities organized by the Art of Europe.

Successful candidates will be mature, detail-oriented, able to work independently, adept with technology and administrative tasks, and will have a demonstrated interest in curatorial work. Please note any foreign language skills and proficiency; knowledge of French language and art history is preferred.

Ideal candidates must be able to commit to work onsite 20 hours weekly, mostly between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday between September 11, 2026 – May 14, 2027. Additionally, graduate interns are required to attend the following professional development sessions during the semester: Orientation on Sept 11, Meet the Leadership Team (date to be announced at orientation), and Final Presentations on Dec 4. They are welcome to attend any other sessions that appeal to them.
